Some outings from the house

No one has ever made any sense of these directions so just head off and find your own paths!

If you go out of the house and turn right you will see a steep path on your left after a few yards that leads to a lane and after about 100yrds goes to the lower road. This will be the main starting point for most of your walks around the village or your return point if you take the path to the valley that runs exactly to the right side of the platanos Café building. There are obviously many more ways in and out but this is the best for us. When you get to the road you can go straight across and in ten minutes you will be at the chapel that you can see on the hill from the bathroom of our house. If you turn right the road will take you to the top of the village(don't bother). If you turn left then you can get into the river valley through a path about 100 yards down on the left that takes you through a neat olive grove. At the end of the grove you should be able to see a path on the left that in a few yards will take you to the river bed. Be careful as there are a few strand of old barbed wire laying flat across this path. Go stright across the river bed for 20 metres and you will find a track. From there turn left and this will eventually take you to the coats rd and the beach ( about 20 minutes walk) or if you follow the path to the right after about 15 minutes that goes up to the top of the cliff you can take the circular walk that will eventually come back to the road from Lahania to Plimiri. When you get back to the road and turn right you can take another farmers track on the right to the river valley after about 50 yards and find your way back to the path to the olive grove where you first turned off. This is my favourite evening constitutional and takes about an hour and 15 minutes. Instead of leaving the road to the olive grove(at the beginning) you can walk further down and leave the metalled road where it bears right to Messanagros and follow the unmade up road that goes to Plimiri. After five minutes you come to a bridge where if you can turn left down the track past the village dump. You will be on the same tracks after five minutes or so that you would be in when you came out the olive grove at the start of the first version of this walk. If you turn right up the valley immediately after the bridge then you are in exploring country which can take you to a lot of places but it is too difficult to describe. There are so many paths everywhere you go. Sometimes they lead somewhere, sometimes they just stop at a field. If you are in the country then if you are in a wheat field then there will be tractor paths somewhere leading to the next one. If you are in scrub then you have to follow the goat trails, which can often be difficult, unless you are a goat. It may be hot when you go so just remember to take water and sun cream and something light to cover you up in case you burn. The best beach near Lahania is called Pink Floyd and the little bay that leads from it if you walk around the headland. You need to go to Plimiri, which is on the way from Lahania to Katavia on the coast rd, or you can get to it on the old road I have just described. Dusty and bumpy in a car this one. Go to Plimiri and there is a restaurant by the beach where you can get a cool drink. If you swim at this beach then you need to be careful that you don't step on the black sea urchins. Jason did. It is the only place I know where they have these. If you want to go to Pink Floyd then get back into the car and drive back up the road for a 100 yards. You will see a turning on the right that is a dust road up the hill that will take you past some derelict Italian barracks at the top and past these about 100yards further on you will see a place to park. The access to Pink Floyd is a steep path down to the beach that is a little difficult to find but is well used. Up above the beach if you walk around you will find hundreds of broken amphora. Once on the beach take a walk to the end of the headland and go onto the next beach which is just a dream. There are snorkels in the house and it is worthwhile having a go as the fish are quite pretty. The east coast of the Island where Lahania is has a lot of sandy beaches and little rocky coves but the west coast is really wild. Take the road to Katavia and follow the signs to Prasonisi. Alternatively take the road from Katavia to Apolakia and when you get to the centre take the road to the left to Monolithos. At Monolithos you turn left to go to the view point and you will see that you passed a dirt road on your right that leads to all kinds of places. Alternatively go past the view point and keep going for about five miles and then you get to the place where the caves are. Well worth a visit. I would also recommend you go to Ancient Kamiros and Rhodes old town.
