Lahania Village

The village Lahania has about 200 houses but only has about 60 permanent residents. It is in the south of Rhodes island and well away from the more popular tourist package destinations. A taxi from the airport will cost about £40 and will take about 1 1/4 hours to travel the 80 kilometres to the village. The village is built on a hillside in a river valley that is about a mile and a half from the beach. Unless you are very intrepid or content to stay in the village you will need a car or a moped as the nearest shop is in the next village about seven miles away. There are four bars/restaurants in the village so you do not need to cook at home but you will want to get at least some basic supplies in as opening times can be erratic. The village is sign-posted from the main coast road and when you get to the outskirts you follow the signs to the 'Platanos' where you can park and walk to the house which is about 100 yards away. The 'Platanos' is a three hundred year old plane tree which shades a platia with natural springs and an old Turkish system of irrigation chanels. The village church is there, as is the Platanos café which is by far the prettiest place to sit, eat, drink and chat. Young kids will play for hours in the water and chase the pet ducks. Around the village there are plenty of beautiful places to explore up and down the river valley with some spectacular views if you are prepared to hike a little.
